How it works
Enter the price and your take-home pay, the amount left after tax and deductions, per year, month, week or hour. Nothing here works out tax: it uses the figure you give.
Your hourly take-home is your pay divided by the hours you are paid for. A yearly figure is divided by hours a week times paid weeks a year; a monthly figure is multiplied by 12 first; a weekly figure is divided by your hours a week. The price divided by that hourly figure is the time it costs. Working days use your hours a week spread over the days you work, so 37.5 hours over 5 days is 7.5 hours a day.
Seeing a price as “a day and a half at work” can make it easier to decide whether something is worth it to you, or whether a cheaper, secondhand or repaired option would do.
Questions
Should I use pay before or after tax?
After. You pay for things out of take-home pay, so that gives the honest number of hours. Use the amount on your payslip or bank statement.
What if my hours change from week to week?
Use an average over a few months, or enter an hourly take-home figure directly by choosing “an hour”.
Are my pay details stored?
No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere; only your choice of currency symbol is remembered.
